Frequently asked questions
What is IT asset recovery?
IT asset recovery is the process of safely and efficiently reclaiming and reprocessing electronic equipment and hardware, such as computers, servers, and mobile devices, when they reach the end of their useful life. The goal is to extract maximum value from these assets through resale, refurbishment, recycling, or proper disposal, ensuring environmental responsibility and data security. This process not only mitigates environmental impact by diverting waste from landfills but also provides financial returns or cost savings to organisations.
Can all IT equipment be recycled or refurbished through IT asset recovery programs?
While a significant portion of IT equipment can be refurbished or recycled, the feasibility depends on several factors, including the age, condition, and type of the equipment, as well as market demand for certain materials or components. Refurbishing involves repairing and updating devices for resale or donation, extending their useful life. Recycling involves breaking down equipment into raw materials (like metals, plastics, and glass) that can be reused in manufacturing new products. However, some items may be too obsolete or damaged to refurbish or recycle economically and must be disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner, adhering to local regulations and environmental standards. Our experienced Commercial Team can work with you to assess your assets to determine the most appropriate and sustainable course of action.
How do you ensure data security during the recycling process?
Data security is our top priority. We follow strict data destruction protocols to erase all personal information from devices before they are refurbished or recycled. Our processes are compliant with the highest levels of international data erasure, ensuring your information is securely handled and completely destroyed. If the item you are dropping off contains a detachable memory card, USB stick etc, please remove this from your device and hand that to one of our team directly. This has its own method of disposal which will ensure your data, photos etc are safely destroyed.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need a special space or set-up for the E-Week activities?
Not at all! Echo will provide everything needed, including posters for classrooms and communal spaces. Your school champion simply coordinates bin placement and helps promote the week internally.
What year levels are the learning resources designed for?
The learning resources are best suited for students in Years 7–8, with activities and lesson plans aligned to their curriculum level. However, younger year groups can still participate in the collection and community aspects of the programme, and teachers are welcome to adapt materials as needed.
What types of e-waste can we collect during E-Week?
Schools can collect a wide range of items, including old laptops, mobile phones, tablets, chargers, cables, computer accessories, and small household electronics. We’ll provide a full list of accepted items in your starter pack.
How does the collection work - do we need to sort or store the e-waste?
Echo will provide collection bins for your school, and there’s no need arrange pick-up after E-Week or following your E-Day event and handle everything safely and securely.
Is there a cost to participate?
No - this programme is completely free for schools, including all recycling, resources, and logistical support. It’s our way of supporting environmental education and action across Auckland.
What happens to the e-waste once it’s collected?
All collected items are securely transported to Echo’s accredited recycling facilities, where they are responsibly dismantled and processed. Your school will receive a Recycling Certificate detailing the total amount of e-waste diverted from landfill.
